Dry Cupping

Dry Cupping is done by applying plastic or glass suction cups to skin. The suction is achieved by putting a small, manually-operated suction pump on a valve which is attached to each suction cup. The therapist can control the level of suction used. Multiple cups can be applied at one time to a painful or stiff area and are left on the skin anywhere from 5-20 minutes.
When the cups are removed, the skin treated will have red circular areas that correspond to the diameter of the cup.

Dry Cupping benefits:

  • Increases blood circulation
  • Acts as a natural pain reliever
  • Relieves congestion
  • Aids in the removal of toxins and other impurities through the surface of the skin
  • Stimulates the immune system to help fight off illnesses
  • Stimulates the body’s own defences to prevent diseases
  • Promotes general well-being

Equipment

  • Suction pump
  • Cup

Steps to Follow

  • Place a cup on the affected area. (Use large cups on large and flat areas of the body and smaller cups on small or bon yareas.)
  • Use the pump to create a weak suction.
  • The cups are then left on the skin for as long as 30 minutes.
  • Then remove the cups by pressing the skin to allow oxygen to enter into the cup thus equalizing the pressure and releasing it.

Reminder

You must stay with the patients whilst they have cups attached to their skin. When creating the vacuum using the pump, always make sure the patient is comfortable with the level of suction. If it is too painful, remove the cup and reapply withthe appropriate level of suction. The therapist must always be attentive and listen to the patient’s needs.

Treatment After Care for Dry and Massage cupping

  • Avoid having a shower/bath for 24 hours
  • Avoid dairy and red meat products for 2 days. These foods require more energy and blood flow during digestion, therefore reducing the blood flow to the cupped areas and slowing the healing process.
  • Apply black seed oil on cupped areas to help itchiness, aid healing, reduce scarring and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours
  • Avoid sexual relations for 24 hours.
