What is Hijama?
Hijama is an arabic word which commonly refers to the cupping therapy (and more specifically to the wet cupping which we will develop further). It originates from the arabic word hijama which literally means “sucking”.
Cupping Therapy History
Cupping Therapy (CT) has been practiced in many countries since ancient times. The true origin of CT remains uncertain to this day. Chinese are considered responsible for cupping, however the earliest references to CT date back to the ancient Egyptians.
How does Cupping work?
The cups used in a cupping procedure are usually made of glass or plastic. Other types are made of bamboo, iron, or pottery. In dry cupping, the cup is placed on the skin and a suction device removes the air from the cup to create the vacuum.

Wet Cupping
Contrary to dry cupping, wet cupping requires superficial scratches and antiseptic application to the surface of the skin. Indeed, the term wet cupping is used when the therapist makes small incisions on the skin after the cup has been removed.

Dry Cupping
Dry Cupping is done by applying plastic or glass suction cups to skin. The suction is achieved by putting a small, manually-operated suction pump on a valve which is attached to each suction cup.

Massage Cupping
Massage cupping is done by light suction in order to boost blood circulation. Black seed oil is applied generously to affected area, which will allow the therapist to glide the cups over the affected area.

Fire Cupping
Fire cupping is the most traditional technique. It uses glass cups and the fire creates a better suction with glass cups. Put a flammable substance inside of a glass or silicone cup before lighting it on fire.

Cupping in Islam
Cupping played a large role as part of Islamic medicine. Prophet Muhammad had hijama performed on him and he was informed of its effectiveness as a remedy by the angels during the night journey. It is Wet Cupping that has a relation to Islam; it is one of the remedies from the Sunnah of the Prophet . It is also the best form of cupping.
The following are some of the Islamic narrations regarding Cupping Therapy:
Narrated Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah said: I did not pass by an assembly of Angels on the night that I was taken on the night journey (Lailatul Israa), except that they said: Oh Muhammad, order your nation with Cupping (to use cupping as a treatment).
Narrated Jabir when he returned to Muqanna’ he said: I will not leave until you treat yourself with Cupping. For indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: Indeed there is a cure in it (in Cupping).
Narrated Jabir that Umm Salamah (wife of the Prophet ) sought permission from the Messenger of Allah to have Cupping performed on her. So the Prophet ordered Abu Taibah to cup her. He said: I assumed that he was her brother from breast-feeding or he was a boy under the age of puberty.
